LightCon: Call for Papers

Especially in these times, innovations and thoughts of the future are what keep us going!
The new international trade fair for lightweight construction solutions “LightCon”, organized by Deutsche Messe with Composites United as the technology sponsor, will for the first time in 2021 showcase the latest trends and solutions in the field of lightweight construction, spanning all materials, technologies and sectors of industry.

Again we are happy to be part of this promising sector of Additive Manufacturing, our Managing Director Stefanie Brickwede together with Dr. Gunnar Merz from Composites United e.V. heads the Advisory Board of the LightCon 2021.

In an interview, Stefanie informed us, why she supports this trade fair: “Lightcon has the great task of providing information about innovative materials and new manufacturing technologies to enable new applications. To this end, experts will provide information on the latest trends and real implemented applications can be experienced on site. Especially in small and medium-sized companies, the possibilities are often not sufficiently explored yet. Get inspired by other companies at LightCon!”

The Advisory Board is convinced that lightweight construction solutions are indispensable for achieving climate targets and a sustainable economy. “Sustainability Needs Lightweight Design” is therefore the motto of LightCon 2021 and focuses on four key topics: material solutions, manufacturing innovations, sustainable lightweight engineering and design, and applications and use cases. The deadline for submitting presentations on these topics is December 10.

RAILiability & Friends

The MGA Mobility working group RAILiability is the platform for exchange of European railways for the use of Additive Manufacturing e.g. in the spare parts sector for mutual benefit and the development of common use cases.
Since the beginning this has been a closed group for the railways to share knowledge amongst their own kind, without external influences.
However, RAILiability has now considered inviting guests from the network to individual meetings with specific topics. This newely introduced meeting format will be known as “RAILiability & Friends”.

The pioneer working joining RAILiability will be Materials. This working group with more than 60 members is by far our largest group, proving the point that when it comes to higher accuracies, better components, new technologies and new AM applications, there is no getting-around the topic of Materials. In Additive Manufacturing, the range of materials is even wider than the number of different technologies therefore the aim of the group is to bundle common interests, better understand the market and jointly advance AM.

The topic of this first fusion of the two working groups will be “flame-resistant plastics”. On Dec 3rd 2020 MATERIALS & RAILiability want to discuss the development needs of flame-resistant plastics and push the topic further.

Welcoming new members

Now more than ever it has become clear that Additive Manufacturing is a technology capable of withstanding crises. We are going against the negative Corona trend and greet seven new members since August from different branches of the industry to our network.

Meet our newest members:

SNFC

The SNCF is the public service provider for rail and mobility solutions in France. The SNCF is currently working on additive manufacturing for trains and infrastructure with a focus on maintenance and engineering of rail vehicles and is interested in sharing experiences with European industry representatives, which could be done now and in the future.

r3volutionD

r3volutionD would like to expand and deepen its network and knowledge in the AM industry and learn more about new materials and processes in order to drive innovation in the company and develop exciting new products in the equestrian sector. To this end, they bring a slightly different perspective on additive manufacturing.

ILAS TU HH

Equipped with a long history in laser material processing, the Institute for Laser and Systems Engineering researches and develops additive manufacturing processes. In addition to technology transfer to industry, the focus is on the development of bionic 3D printing technologies, the training of skilled personnel and the design and calculation of multifunctional additive components.

SPEE3D

SPEE3D was founded because the same problems came up again and again… the production of metal parts was simply difficult. Through new technologies, SPEE3D enables the world’s most cost effective manufacturing process for metal additives. They make metal parts in the fastest possible way and enable the use of metal cold spray technology to produce industrial quality metal parts in minutes, not days or weeks.

OST FH

The OST is the university of applied sciences of the six cantons of Eastern Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. With six departments and more than 1,000 current research projects, the OST unites an educational and research tradition of more than 170 years. The OST aims to support the network with experience and to build up further know-how, as well as to accompany the further development of AM.

Additive Marking

As a young start-up, Additive Marking wants to further develop an already very disruptive industry. They offer software solutions to integrate individual markings into digital product data. Their vision is to help companies to further automate their additive production lines by using software “”The path to industrial, additive series production is not always straight and often not easy to follow, but our expertise and agility will help us and our partners to follow it””.

Fehrmann Alloys

3D printing is the cross-section production technology of the future. But there is no printing without metal powder: With 50 years of experience in the development of high-performance aluminum for casting and the first own high-performance aluminum powders, Fehrmann is making a significant contribution to establishing 3D printing and strengthening Germany and Europe as leading regions for metal 3D printing. “

Announcement Kick Off Working Group Hospitals – MGA Medical

Additive manufacturing (AM) for medical applications/devices has been on everyone’s lips for quite some time, but the corona pandemic has once again demonstrated the special potential of this technology, such as the speed with which individualized products can be manufactured.
Within our network Mobility goes Additive (MGA) our division Medical goes Additive is working hard on establishing new ideas and finding technical solutions for problems for which there currently are none.
The result-oriented work is our top priority! Our aim: to lower the barriers for 3D printing in accordance with the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and generate quality improvements plus economically optimized solutions.
Three successful working groups are already boosting this aim: “Use Cases”, “Materials” and “Approval”. Now, a new working group exclusively for employees in hospitals like physicians, nurses, technicians and the administrations is going to be established. In order not to influence the clinical, scientific and economic exchange of experience between the players from the start, suppliers and consultants will only be invited at a later time.

We aim for an open discussion regarding in-house printing versus external suppliers, development and optimization of materials, tools, spare parts and techniques, training of employees, planning of joint projects and many other topics to further increase awareness of AM in clinical settings. Therefore, the new working group Hospitals is also aimed at different medical fields to bring them closer together via the common interface AM.
Your ideas, visions and experiences are in demand! We offer the appropriate industry contacts and knowledge of the latest technologies.

This newest working group HOSPITALS will kick off on January 12 with the aim of finding AM solutions suitable for use in and by hospitals.
Join in with Mayo Clinic (USA), the University Hospital Basel (Switzerland), the Charité Berlin, the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg, the Armed Forces Hospital Berlin (Germany) and many others and participate in HOSPITALS.
