Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner visits our office!

We were delighted to welcome Kai Wegner (CDU), the governing mayor of Berlin, for a visit to our office. This was a particularly important meeting for us, as the political framework surrounding Additive Manufacturing plays a vital role in its future success. Mr. Wegner was not only engaged and supportive, he also provided valuable assistance by offering to connect us with key contacts. Our team truly felt that he had a natural understanding of the challenges facing AM and showed a genuine eagerness to help us tackle them.

During the meeting, we discussed the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure wider adoption of AM in Germany, including growing international competition, the need for better communication with small and medium-sized enterprises, finding skilled personnel, and overcoming technical and regulatory barriers. However, political support will be essential for accelerating AM’s broader implementation. This support could come in many forms: developing a national and Europe-wide AM strategy, targeted funding programs for rapid economic implementation, and more support for research and development. Most importantly, we also emphasized the need to integrate AM into the curricula of educational institutions to build a skilled workforce for the future.

Throughout the visit, Mr. Wegner was particularly drawn to the many different 3D-printed exhibits we showcased, which spanned various sectors. As a parting gift, we presented him with a 3D-printed metal television tower – Berlin’s iconic symbol. Just like our technology, it represents something digital, that connects people, and helps overcome boundaries.

It’s meetings like these that help raise awareness of AM and attract political advocates who can drive the change we need. With Mr. Wegner’s visit, we’ve gained a strong ally, and we look forward to continuing this promising collaboration to shape the future of AM in Berlin, Germany and beyond.

Let’s Talk: Why Public Transport Must Embrace Additive Manufacturing

In May we hosted a meeting with Berlin Public transport Company BVG, where we explored many exciting ideas and potential projects. One key takeaway was the strong need right now of an open, collaborative environment within the Public Transport sector!

Sharing success stories, challenges, ideas, models and experiences is exactly what we need to advance the Public Transport Sector with Additive Manufacturing together.

MGA has a solid background in rail with many years of experience in transportation, thanks also to our RAILiability and Approval in Rail Working Groups, and we’re proud to have Siemens, Alstom and many others as members, contributing their extensive expertise. We believe the knowledge gained from rail can greatly benefit various public transport components, enabling smooth and benchmark-setting implementations.

We’re calling on all of you—members and non-members alike—to help us connect with those interested in driving the Public Transport Industry forward with the implementation of Additive Manufacturing at Industrial Level!

Don’t hesitate to contact us or Dr. Sven Fritzsche if you would like to learn more.

Impressions of 3dp Basel & EHFAM 2024

At the 1st European Healthcare Forum for Additive Manufacturing on September 6 – 7, we were thrilled to welcome participants, sponsors, and exhibitors from across Europe to the heart of Basel for a two-day deep dive into the potential of AM in healthcare. Organized by our MGA Medical Division and in collaboration with FHNW School of Life Sciences and University Hospital Basel, the event was packed with presentations, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities. It was also fantastic to see so many of our members showcasing their innovations and connecting with other key players in the industry.

Day 1 The event kicked off with opening remarks that set the stage for a day full of innovation and collaboration, with a focus on advancing healthcare through AM. Keynotes on bioprinting, medical devices, and point-of-care 3D printing grabbed everyone’s attention, showing how AM is transforming healthcare delivery by making it more sustainable, personalized, and efficient.

One of the highlights was the definitely 3D Printing in Life Sciences Award Basel 2024, which showcased the latest breakthroughs in 3D printing to tackle real-world healthcare challenges.

Evening Event We wrapped up Day 1 at the Odelya Hotel, celebrating MGA Medical’s five-year anniversary. Our Managing Director Stefanie Brickwede, former Division Lead Cora Lüders-Theuerkauf and current Head of Medical Naomi Nathan shared the Medical Division’s journey and vision for the future. We were honored to have Lukas Engelberger, Member of the Government Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and President of the Conference of Health Directors, join us to express his excitement about the potential of AM in healthcare. The evening was a perfect opportunity to relax, celebrate, and spark future collaborations in a laid-back atmosphere – and we think it’s safe to say, that everyone had a great time!

Day 2 Day 2 kicked off with fresh insights into AM’s role in healthcare, touching on sustainability, impact measurement, and investment. Key discussions tackled the political, regulatory, and financial aspects of AM in medicine, while hands-on workshops gave participants a chance to experience AM in action—from eye surgery training using 3D-printed models to exploring the future of mass personalization in healthcare. Conversations around regulatory challenges, pharmaceutical advancements, and supply chain automation highlighted the evolving landscape of AM in healthcare, providing valuable insights for the road ahead.

Key Takeaways EHFAM2024 wasn’t just a conference – it was a platform for exchanging ideas, forging partnerships, and pushing the boundaries of what AM can achieve in healthcare. Some key takeaways were:

  • Collaboration is crucial to advancing AM in healthcare.
  • We need to raise awareness about the transformative power of AM.
  • Generating solid evidence is essential to drive regulatory and investment support.
  • Educating stakeholders on how AM creates a more sustainable and patient-centric healthcare system is key.

Honorable Mentions A huge thank you to our sponsors, media partners, exhibitors, and participants – your energy made EHFAM2024 the success it was. We hope everyone left with valuable insights, new connections, and a shared vision for the future!

Looking Ahead When we took over the former AM Medical Days, our vision was to grow and elevate the event by uniting forces across Europe to drive AM in healthcare. The potential is undeniable, and dedicated events like EHFAM are critical to shaping that future. With this first edition, we’ve kicked off the journey with a bang and we can’t wait for what’s next.

See you at EHFAM2025!
