The MGA Mobility | MGA Medical – Mobility goes Additive e.V. Annual Meeting 2020

Despite all Corona odds, we made it!!! Our first ever hybrid event and certainly one of the last few opportunities for the AM community to physically meet eachother is over.

On 6 October 2020, Day 1 of our two-day hybrid event, we kicked-off with the General Assembly including the election of the Executive Board of MGA Mobility and MGA Medical (Mobility goes Additive e.V.).

The Executive Board was newly constituted and has been officially confirmed, now consisting of four board members again:

Gorden Falk from DB Heavy Maintenance (DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH) was appointed as Chairman of the Board. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Claus Emmelmann remains as the Vice Chairman for MGA and also Johannes Emmelheinz has been confirmed as a member of the Board. Moreover, Güngör Kara from Ottobock was newly appointed, representing the Medical division of MGA.

The cash auditor Philip Janssen was discharged from his function. His position is now taken over by Karsten Reinhardt, Director Finance / Controlling at DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH. Moreover, the financial budget for the financial year 2019/2020 of MGA Mobility goes Additive e.V. and the budget planning for the current financial year 2020/2021 were approved.

At 16.00 in the afternoon, the conference part – open for also non-members to attend – started with a brief Welcome address of the Executive Board Chairman Gorden Falk followed by a clear highlight: a keynote of COBOD International and PERI on concrete printing, presented by Henrik Lund-Nielsen and Dr. Fabian Meyer-Broetz.

The later afternoon was used to present some outstanding working group results. Working group leaders and participants of the working groups Approval in Rail, Ecological Sustainability, RAILiability, Education, MOBILITY | Materials as well as of the MGA MEDICAL working groups gave a thrilling status report about their special and specific outcomes.

Public funding opportunities for AM were addressed by Werner Loscheider from the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy and David Hampel from our strong supporter Berlin Partner for Business and Technology spoke about the potential of Berlin as a Capital of Additive Manufacturing. The clear highlight of Day 1 was the opening of the newly installed IAM HUB Berlin here at the Marienpark.

Day 2 delivered several cross-industry presentations with great keynotes from EOS, KIND Hörgeräte, Siemens Mobility, the Dutch Navy, Autodesk, NedTrain and ended with a highlight: a panel discussion on “AM – where are you going?”.

Finally, we also introduced some new features of the MGA platform to you. Now, your perfect Marketing tool is ready: weboostAM.com, the MGA platform for your company portfolio, use cases as well as the newly installed category Technical Standards. Pimp your profile now and attract new 3d printing business!

The MGA AM2020 has been a great course and we thank everyone for joining in, whether in person on-site or virtually! With 160 attendees it has been our most challenging, but also biggest MGA event ever!

In hopin, the tool of choice for virtual participation, we encountered attendees from almost 15 countries of the world, e.g. Germany, Hungary, Israel, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Sweden, France and even Japan. What fascinated us the most is how well the virtual experience obviously worked: on average, one virtual participant spent 444 minutes in the video stream on both days, which is an impressive more than 7 hours! Keeping people on the ball for so long is the greatest success for us!

Thanks also to our sponsors and supporters to make this event possible at this high level, namely Siemens Mobility and Autodesk as well as our partner Berlin Partner for Business and Technology.

A selection of photos is already online – to sneak in go to impressions. More documentation will follow online soon… so stay tuned!

Technology Transfer Programme for Lightweighting – Funding opportunities for additive manufacturing

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Lightweighting is a holistic design philosophy. It aims to save weight, material and energy while also ensuring, and even improving, the performance and efficiency of components and complete systems. This is achieved through load reduction and a switch to new construction materials. By reducing mass and the amount of material needed, and by using the right lightweight design, components’ carbon footprint can be significantly reduced before, during and after operation. The brand-new shapes and designs developed for lightweight designs, which are often based on those in nature, are difficult if not impossible to realise using conventional manufacturing processes. In order to advance lightweighting as a key enabling technology, it is therefore crucial to use new construction technologies such as additive manufacturing, and to develop these further. Lightweighting and additive manufacturing are thus two technologies that complement each other extremely well.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Lightweighting is flagged up as a game-changing technology in Germany’s Coalition Agreement for the 19th legislative period, as well as in its Sustainability Strategy and 2030 Industrial Strategy. In order to actively promote lightweight construction, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has set up a programme called the Technology Transfer Programme for Lightweighting (German abbreviation: TTP LB). The programme aims to establish lightweighting as a driver of innovation for sustainable business, and to make an important contribution to achieving the Federal Government’s climate targets. Funding of around 300 million euros is being made available for this purpose between 2020 and 2030.
The funding provided by the Federal Government is being used to support new technological developments, construction techniques and the use of new materials, projects focusing on resource efficiency and substitution, standardisation issues and demonstration projects with the overarching goal of reducing carbon emissions. In particular, the programme’s first funding line seeks to promote innovative design principles and technologies, such as additive manufacturing, as drivers and enablers of sustainable lightweighting. The focus is on optimising and automating lightweighting production processes (especially in additive manufacturing) in order to raise sustainability throughout the entire life cycle of the products.
Under the Technology Transfer Programme for Lightweighting, funding line 3 ‘Resource efficiency and substitution’ also offers plenty of scope for additive manufacturing projects. It aims to promote projects in which, for example, additive manufacturing processes are used to replace resource-intensive materials with more resource-efficient and lighter materials, and components can be produced directly on site. This reduces both time and carbon emissions as it eliminates the need for transport.
The Technology Transfer Programme for Lightweighting was successfully launched in April 2020 despite the considerable restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. Outlines for some 180 projects, for which over 60% funding is being provided by industry, were submitted by the first deadline (April 2020). These covered innovations that can be applied across a broad variety of different industries – from the automotive sector, to aerospace, through to medicine and construction. Full applications are now currently under way for about 60 of these projects. The next funding deadlines for innovative additive manufacturing processes for sustainable lightweighting are 1 October 2020 and 1 April 2021.

Detailed information can be found under TTP LB and Initiative Leichtbau des BMWi.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

“Additive Inspirations” – Session #4

After having conducted three sessions of our format Additive Inspirations so far, we presently feel to focus once more onto our campaign 3D Printing fights Corona which we initiated this spring. The second wave is already underway, and the number of new infections in Europe is rising again, in some countries very rapidly.

The September issue will focus again on COVID-19, the latest developments and the ways in which 3D printing can assist in the pandemic.

Applications where 3D printing could help (face shields, masks, ventilators)
• Face shields: summary of most suitable devices (MGA summary)
• mouth-nose-masks: analysis of different 3D printed masks (MSc Sascha Hartig, University of German Armed Forces)
• ventilators
• snorkeling masks for ventilator use (Alessandro Romaioli, Technical Officer @ ISINNOVA)

Session #3: Additive Inspirations

A virtual teaser to the MGA Annual Meeting 2020

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]After our last two Additive Inspirations with mobility and medtech focus, the August brown bag session #3 will give a true inspiration from a different industry: Construction Technology.
We hope you join in and sign up for Filippo Gilardi, R&D Lead at MX3D, on 27 August 2020 from 11.30 to 12.15 CEST who will present a use case of a metal 3d printed bridge and invites you to explore the AM potential in the construction and architecture industry.

Why bridges and construction? Mobility has a very close link to infrastructure projects which is also why we invited a concrete 3d printing manufacturer to come and speak about 3d printing with concrete at our MGA Annual Meeting 2020 from 6 until 7 October 2020.

After the Corona shutdown, digital technologies are in greater demand than ever before: aviation and automotive markets have suffered severely from the crisis, new jobs for 3D printing machines have to be identified to fill capacities, while operators try to compensate for supply bottlenecks with 3D printing. Additive Manufacturing is in search of new impulses for its market.

To sweeten the wait time to our MGA Annual Meeting 2020 (6 – 7 October 2020, Berlin) and to use it effectively, we have started Additive Inspirations end of June, a new series of virtual keynotes once a month. Digital Female Leader Award 2020
vote for AM until 16 August 2020!

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Women in the digital economy – they are rare, but they DO exist! They are founders or shapers in business, politics and society who drive digitalization forward and make a lasting impact. The Digital Female Leader Award – an initiative of Global Digital Women – aims to shine a light on inspiring and motivating women and tell their stories. In this respect, we are very proud that our Managing Director has been nominated in the category “Mobility”.

The Digital Female Leader Award prize is awarded in 15 categories. Out of three finalists per category, the winner will be awarded and will be announced at the awards ceremony on 28 November 2020. In addition, the winner of the Audience Award will be chosen from the pool of all applicants in August 2020 – so your vote counts now![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_btn title=”CLICK HERE AND VOTE UNTIL 16 AUGUST 2020″ style=”custom” custom_background=”#e67807″ custom_text=”#ffffff” size=”lg” align=”left” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fdigital-female-leader.de%2Fen%2Fbewerberinnen20%2Fstefanie-brickwede%2F|title:CLICK%20HERE%20AND%20VOTE%20UNTIL%2016%20AUGUST%202020|target:%20_blank|”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”4111″ img_size=”600×800″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]For many years, MGA has been committed to the visibility of women in our industry. There is a good reason why we are initiators of the Women in AM Summit, which takes place every March ahead of the Additive Manufacturing Forum organized by our partner IPM AG. At this event, we give women in 3d printing a stage as, with only around 13 percent, they are still clearly unequally represented in the AM industry.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Stefanie Brickwede works as a Senior Executive for our founding member Deutsche Bahn AG heading the corporate project 3d printing, a highly innovative and above all digital technology. Since the beginning, more than 20,000 parts have been additively manufactured which contributed to the performance and reliability of the German railway system.
Four years ago, Stefanie passionately launched the “MGA” network, which has evolved into the leading international network for industrial additive manufacturing. Besides these roles, she has also been called as the project leader by the Berlin senate to establish the Industrial Additive Manufacturing Hub Berlin, a neutral place where companies, universities and politics can explore the advantages of AM in a beautiful coworking place with 3d printers. Located on the large area in the south of Berlin, the IAM Hub Berlin gives great potential for the settlement of 3d printing company and is going to be opened up with a ceremony on 6 October 2020 during the course of our MGA Annual Meeting 2020.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]With her tremendous spirit and dedication to industrial 3D printing, she encourages women in additive manufacturing and shares her experiences, especially those she gained as a woman in a leadership position in a technical-digital field. Anyone who would also like to exchange views on this matter should save the date and join our 4th European Summit for Women in Additive Manufacturing in Berlin on 10 March 2021 prior to the AM Forum 2021 organized by our partner IPM AG.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]More articles and interviews on the topic:

Call for formnext Start-up Challenge 2020

The Start-up Challenge has been a key pillar of Europe’s largest trade fair for 3D printing and additive manufacturing, the formnext, for many years. Now it’s time for a new edition!

Since 29. June 2020, innovative and young start-ups may apply for the formnext Start-up Challenge. Not only will they be supported with a free admission. It rather offers numerous pioneers a unique platform to present themselves and their concepts to a number of investors, the press and the relevant market or to find their own professional entry into our fascinating industry.

At the latest since the corona pandemic with its far-reaching consequences for economic, but also social and private life, the topic of sustainability has become more important than ever. In this challenging time, additive manufacturing has often been able to set out one or two rays of hope.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3801″ img_size=”768 x 432″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]This makes it all the more important to underline the importance of sustainability in 3D printing and to motivate those who are enthusiastic about sustainable approaches to our society, but also to our planet Earth this year: be it innovative technology or application concepts, a newly calibrated corporate philosophy or a fresh look at the value chain.

The assessments are based on the 17 goals of the United Nations for sustainable development. Environmental concerns (e.g. green energy and resource conservation) and social aspects (e.g. education and equality) play a central role.

The formnext Start-up Challenge runs until 04.09.2020. MGA is represented on the jury by our MD and network management Stefanie Brickwede.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Final report of Phase 1 for Approval in Rail to be published in October 2020

Final report of Phase 1 for Approval in Rail to be published in October 2020

The working group Approval in Rail of our division MGA Mobility has reached a further important milestone towards the approval of additively manufactured components for safety relevant railway applications. The findings of the first phase – the approval of an additively manufactured component in the railway sector at regional level – were compiled in a bilingual report which has now been completed.

Next step is the national approval of additively manufactured components. Currently expectable load-levels are under investigation.

The working progress will be presented in more detail at the MGA Annual Meeting 2020. The working group will present its current findings regarding the pilot-part for national approval (phase 2) and give first insights into the approach of a generic process qualification. In addition, attending members will receive a copy of the final report of phase 1 at the event.

Stay on track – #weboostam!

The State of 3D Printing 2020

The State of 3D Printing Report: 2020

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Every year, Sculpteo, one of the world’s leading online 3D printing service providers, presents a report on “The State of 3D Printing” – just recently the sixth edition was published for the year 2020.
The report is based on detailed questionnaires completed by global additive manufacturing users as well as customers and partners to determine the status quo of the industry.

What topics are covered in the report?

As a major international player in the 3D printing industry, it is important for both Sculpteo and our network to identify trends, to strengthen the market and to convince new companies of the benefits of this technology.
In order to facilitate access to the technology or to provide established companies with a baseline for new strategies, a pool of data was compiled to provide the basis for the report.

The survey in particular examined the following points:

 • Who exactly uses 3D printing technology?
 • What is 3D printing used for exactly?
 • How is the technology being perceived at present?
 • What business model makes sense for a 3D printing company?
 • Who are the industry’s power users?
 • What are the significant global differences?
 • What has changed over the last six years?

Key findings of the report

After six years, a clear development in the application areas of additive manufacturing technology can be recognized. 3d printing is generally recognised as a very future-oriented process. More and more companies are getting involved in the industry, more and larger investments are being made in the technology.
In essence, Sculpteo’s report captures four key findings:

 • Standstill is the Achilles’ heel of 3d printing.
 • 3d printing has a reputation for being very costly.
 • 3d printing is mainly established in specific manufacturing industries.
 • 3d printing is increasingly being perceived as a production technology rather than merely a prototyping method.

Moreover, it outlines four clearly identifiable development areas for 3D printing: materials, sustainability, technological progress and cost-effectiveness.
